2014 Kettering Holiday At Home Grand Marshal

Mr. Charlie Hazell and Ms. Jackie Hazell

Charlie and Jackie

My brother, Charlie Hazell, 54 years old, has lived in Kettering his entire life. He was born with Cerebral Palsy and not expected to live past the age of 2 years old. He attended Gorman and Grace A. Greene schools and was the first handicapped student to graduate from Fairmont West High School. His speech is difficult to understand and he drives a motorized wheelchair.

Charlie has been going to United Rehabilitation Services for the past 32 years. He delivers mail throughout the entire building. He has developed a sense of self worth, autonomy, independence, and a strong work ethic. He is the top seller of Ducks for the Annual Regatta, top seller of Christmas candy wreaths, he participates in Celebrity Bowling, he volunteers at the URS Annual Telethon and he enters data in the computer for URS mail outs.

Charlie has worked part time at the Kettering Recreation Center since 1982. He loves going to work and interacting with his co workers and the public.

Charlie and our neighbor, Kevin Bratton, started a neighborhood watch program in 2010 for our area. Charlie went around the neighborhood and collected names, addresses and phone numbers from over fifty families. He and Kevin organize the Neighborhood Watch Block Party every summer. Everyone enjoys the camaraderie while eating and playing corn hole.

Charlie goes to Fairmont football and basketball games and musical plays with our neighbor, Roger Bauser. He enjoys all Fairmont activities. In the summer time, you will see Charlie driving around the neighborhood and at Lincoln Park Commons talking to everyone. Several of our neighbors call him, The Neighborhood Ambassador

Kettering Holiday At Home Foundation is very pleased to honor Mr. Charlie Hazell and Ms. Jackie Hazell as the 2014 Grand Marshals.
